Deacons' Corner

There are three ordained offices of ministry in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Board of Deacons is one of them.  The Book of Order says the office of deacon “is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ.”  At Northminster, the Deacons are called to promote fellowship and hospitality, foster group activities, initiate new members into our community, maintain a visitation program, and provide support to those in need.

In real terms, that means Deacons are responsible for the care and feeding of Northminster’s members and visitors.  They arrange for greeters on Sunday mornings and contact anyone we haven’t seen in awhile.  They provide hospitality for events that take place at church, including Sunday morning coffee, and take meals to those in need.  Most recently Deacons are organizing outings to attend performances and sporting events of our talented children – and their parents, too.  As you can imagine, all this keeps them very busy.  Watch this space for news of everything the Deacons are doing to nurture our community.

What’s New…

The Deacons Request that parents of college students make sure the church has current e-mail and mailing addresses for their children away at school.  It will enable the church to stay in touch with them while their away with newsletters, other communications, and care packages during exam times.  Send the information to Carol in the office (office@troynorthminster.com).

Support Northminster People.  Over the last year, several of us have enjoyed watching many our members and kids in all sorts of productions and events.  It’s as simple as letting us know the when, where, and other details of your event (even if involving yourself) so we can get the word out to the congregation.  Just let us know by contacting Mary Ensroth with information of any event we could all enjoy.

How’s the coffee?  The coffee being served on Sundays is now being purchased through the Presbyterian Coffee Project.  As the second most-heavily traded commodity in the world, coffee is a direct link between our communities and farming communities in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.  Through the Presbyterian Coffee Project, our congregations can enjoy great coffee while helping small farmers as they build a better future for themselves and their families.  Farmers earn a fair price for their products, have access to affordable credit, and gain a long-term trading partner they can trust, a fair trade organization called Equal Exchange.  In addition, for each case of coffee purchased by Presbyterian churches through the project, Equal Exchange makes a contribution to the Presbyterian “Small Farmer Fund” for projects supporting small farmers and their families. By offering Equal Exchange coffee, tea, and cocoa at fellowship hour, and at our other events, we can share fellowship with our global neighbors as we help them to help themselves.

The Deacons’ Fund is available for helping to meet emergency (cash) needs of individuals that the pastor, at his/her sole discretion, decides is in keeping with Northminster’s mission.  Payments are confidential and private between the pastor and recipients.  Those receiving funds are asked to repay the fund if and when they are able, but repayment is not required.
