Gulf Coast Disaster Relief

Damage caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will take months, if not years, to repair.  Many of us want to help and there's no shortage organizations taking donations.  How do you know which are reliable and which aren't?  Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, listed among the top 12 charitable organizations, is one group you can trust to put your money to good use.  Click on their logo to get daily updates on progress made and find out how to contribute to their efforts.  Some of the other organizations Northminster supports, such as Habitat for Humanity and Church World Service (CROP Walk), are also providing relief efforts.  Click on this link for more ways to help.

RESPOND

The RESPOND Food Program is one of the Hunger Ministries of the Presbytery of Detroit Every Saturday, senior and adult foster care persons are fed nutritious, balanced meals at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Detroit.  Area churches take turns providing and serving these meals, and Northminster is among that group.  On one Saturday every other month, our RESPOND crew prepares a complete meal, delivers it to Westminster, and serves the food to all the guests.  Everything needed to prepare the lunch is donated by members or funded through our regular budget.  Northminster has supported RESPOND for many years with a group of dedicated volunteers.  To learn more about PC(USA)'s Hunger Program, click the loaf and fish.

Troy People Concerned

Troy People Concerned is a service organization that helps citizens of Troy who are in crisis.  It acts as an information and referral center, and is available 24/7 to provide assistance.  Northminster’s support of Troy People Concerned goes back many years.  It is one of our church’s missions and also benefits from our CROP Walk donations.  Learn more about what they do by clicking on their logo.

Trinity Partnership

Northminster and Trinity Community Presbyterian Church in Detroit began their partnership in the mid ‘90s.  It started when the pastors at the time, Hank Borchardt at Northminster and Tony Patrick at Trinity, met and struck up a friendship.  They thought bringing the two churches together would be a wonderful way to connect two communities of people, as Hank would say, “on opposite sides of Eight Mile.”  Over the years, our choirs have sung together many times, the first time doing Robert Ray’s “Gospel Mass,” we have worshiped together in each other’s churches, and there have been many opportunities for fellowship.  Want to know more about Trinity?  The picture will take you to their Web site.

Habitat for Humanity

For a number of years, Northminster has supported Habitat for Humanity in its effort to provide affordable housing to the people of Detroit.  We have sent crews of workers and helped financially with regular benevolence giving and special offerings.  In June 2005, Northminster joined the Presbytery of Detroit in supporting the Jimmy Carter Work Project.  President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, came to Detroit to kick off the project that built 30 new houses.  Click here to learn more about Habitat for Humanity.  The JCWP House will take you to Habitat Detroit.

CROP Walk

2007 was year 17 for the Troy area CROP Walk and Northminster members have participated since the very first one.  Donations to CROP support the mission of Church World Service, providing relief, development, and refugee assistance in more than 80 countries.  CWS is part of the ecumenical family of the National Council of Churches and is comprised of 36 different denominations.  In 2007, our 20 walkers raised $4,103 in pledges to support CWS self-help ministries all over the world.  Click on the walkers to learn more.

Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic

RFBD provides recorded books of all kinds to anybody with visual impairments to reading.  In addition to financial support, some Northminster members volunteer as readers at RFBD.  To find out more, click on their logo.

Alternative Gifts International

Since we started offering gifts from Alternative Gifts International, it’s hard to imagine Christmas without it.  So many times we search for the right gifts for acquaintances and loved ones who have everything they need, and no one wants to spend money on a frivolous or unwanted item.  Northminster sponsors an Alternative Gifts Market every year at Christmas time when many members are looking for gifts for relatives, favorite teachers, and friends.  AGI offers a wide selection of items that will really benefit our neighbors all over the world, ranging from $4 to buy school supplies for a child in Iraq to $440 to buy a solar heater for the Lakota Sioux.  Click on the logo to learn more about AGI and how you can give a special gift in honor of your loved ones.

Troy Interfaith Group

The City of Troy is home to a diverse population with many different faiths.  The Troy Interfaith Group was born in early 2005 and brings people of varied backgrounds and beliefs together.  Their first official gathering, the National Day of Prayer Celebration, was held at Northminster on May 5, 2005.  We also hosted their Thanksgiving service in November. This group is planning more opportunities to build understanding across cultural and spiritual boundaries.  Click on the labyrinth to access their new Web site.
