Church History

Northminster Presbyterian Church began as a mission in 1954.  The Rev. MacKay Taylor was called by the Board of Church Extension of the Presbytery of Detroit to canvass the area and begin organization of a church.  Twenty-eight people met for the first service in the manse living room on Sunday, October 31, 1954.

From January 1955 to April 1956, the church rented several rooms of the Poppleton School in Troy for Sunday services and occasional social functions.  Official organization of Northminster Church took place on June 5, 1955, at an evening service held in the chapel of First Presbyterian church in Birmingham.  Seventy-three members composed the charter membership.

The first church unit, a small chapel and large church school room, was completed in May 1956.  The large fellowship hall/sanctuary and main corridor with east classrooms compose the second unit, which was completed in October 1960.  Renovation of the kitchen, classroom, and office areas was completed in 2002.  Our grounds have also been revitalized and beautified over the past ten years.  The south lawn is landscaped to serve as a restful outdoor sanctuary, complete with gazebo, and the inner courtyard is our Memorial Garden.

Our Mission

The mission of Northminster is to bear witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ, to nourish spiritual and personal growth in all our members, to accept and care for members and others we may touch, and to reveal God’s love in the larger community.

People from many religious backgrounds are welcomed at Northminster.  They are respected regardless of how they interpret the meaning of Christ in their lives and are encouraged to express their personal beliefs.  We consider faith a journey during which growth takes place.  Some of us find meaning in language that is traditional and conventional, but others do not.  We are willing and even eager to enrich our experience with the views of others.  We believe it is important to foster an atmosphere of fellowship that makes ours a special church home.  Members are secure in the knowledge that we can rely on the loving support afforded by the warm family environment that is one of the unique qualities of Northminster’s community.
